What To Do When Your Husband Won't Meet Your Needs

“My husband and I have never considered divorce .... sometimes murder, but never divorce!” Dr. Joyce Brothers.

Just kidding I love my husband, but we struggled because we (mostly I) did not have the skills necessary to cultivate connection and intimacy.

When Glenn and I got married, I thought I would automatically know how to keep our marriage healthy and happy. It did not take long for me to realize I was wrong!

I did not want an ordinary marriage; I wanted an extraordinary marriage. Even though this was my heart's desire, I did not have the skills to create a thriving marriage.

When I began being coached, one of the relationships I wanted to work on was my marriage.

My coach taught me so many tools to make my relationship with Glenn better. She taught me how to listen to him without criticizing or judging. She helped me expand my capacity to love him as he was and where he was in his journey.

I also learned:

· To attack the problem, not him.

· To make sure to choose the best time to discuss issues.

· How to choose my words carefully.

· How to say “no” in a kind and loving way.

· How to respect our differences.

She showed me that many ideas my parents instilled in me were subtracting from my marriage instead of adding to it. And she showed me how to let go of those beliefs and create ones that were healthier and more beneficial.

Most importantly, she taught me that Glenn did not have to meet all my needs, that I was capable of meeting many of my own needs.

Want to know one of the best parts? Glenn never went to a coaching call or learned any of the tools.

I was able to increase the intimacy of our relationship and change the dynamic just by changing my thinking. Learning how to do this was so powerful.

With these few simple skills, I transformed our relationship.

It sounds too simple to be true, but it really is that simple.

Once someone shows you how.
